Christchurch Earthquake update
Creative New Zealand will provide regular updates on what is happening in Christchurch and Canterbury as part of our response to the devastating and ongoing earthquakes in the city.
This is our first update wrapping up a range of activity. Future newsletters are likely to be shorter. We do hope you find it useful and please feel free to share with any contacts or colleagues.
Introducing Chris Herbert
Chris Herbert has joined Creative New Zealand as a senior advisor for the Canterbury earthquake response, based in Christchurch. With more than 30 years experience in property development and project marketing, Chris will support the Canterbury arts community to influence decisions that affect its future in the city. He is also helping to identify its needs so resources can be prioritised to best effect, and provide a link between the arts community, local government and central Government.
Creative New Zealand funding
Since the first earthquake in September last year, Creative New Zealand has committed over $700,000 in Emergency Assistance Grants to assist the Christchurch arts sector. Grants have gone to individual artists, arts practitioners and organisations to help support the arts community and regenerate the cultural life of the city. A list of who has received grants can be found on the Who Got Funded section of the Creative New Zealand website.
If you would like to apply for an Emergency Assistance Grant check the Creative New Zealand website for information on eligibility and how to apply.
Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust funding
The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (CEAT) is responsible for allocating funds raised through the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal to support the recovery effort. The fund will be spent on targeted projects in the g reater Christchurch area in the seven categories of education, sport and recreation, heritage and culture, natural environment, spiritual and faith, economic revitalisation, and hardship and relief.
There will not be a standardised grant application form or process for the fund, and funding will not be given to individuals. Proposals for projects that should normally be funded by Government, other existing community grants funds, or private insurance will not be considered. You can find out more about the Trust and its criteria for funding on the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal website. It is anticipated that the majority of the fund will be allocated in the first two years of establishment of the Trust.
If you have an arts proposal that you would like to discuss, contact Chris Herbert, Senior Adviser at Creative New Zealand chris.herbert@creativenz.govt.nz.
